Draw Near to God
God has an open invitation to us here on earth. “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7,8 NKJV)
He is constantly imploring us to be reconciled to Him because He has already bridged the gap that existed between Him and us. And He bridged that gap through Christ Jesus and the atonement through the cross. It wasn’t pretty but it was necessary for our sakes.
I think a lot about this constant journey of walking with the LORD. This is a journey of regaining fellowship with Him. It’s a journey of faith, trust and obedience. And on this journey, we have many precious promises to cause us to trust in God and in what He has done.
Trusting in God is not about faith without substance. God has already revealed His nature and His purpose to us. He has proved through generations that He is faithful. We can trust Him. We can lay down our weight and our cares so that we may receive the freedom He offers us.
We learn who He is through His revealed and inspired word, the Bible. We learn to trust the Holy Spirit as He guides us in the path of righteousness as revealed in the word of God.
In this journey, we learn to pray at all times without ceasing. We learn to constantly commune with our God. We worship Him. We praise Him. We give ourselves to Him and seek His intervention in our lives and in the lives of many. We seek His help to live our lives according to His will. We worship with our brothers and sisters in the Lord Jesus, and we pray together. We contend for the faith in Christ Jesus and stand against lies that threaten to lead others astray from the truth. And all the while we have hope.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 4:3-5 NIV)
We can’t draw near to God in our own strength. We have to trust Him all the way. We have to remember that it’s not in ticking off a checklist, but in truly submitting to the LORD, in loving Him, and in obeying Him.
Drawing near to God is a beautiful journey. Let us not draw back but draw near to Him.
When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,
I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you;
You hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
And afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the strength of my heart
And my portion forever.
Those who are far from you will perish;
You destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.
-Psalm 73: 21-28(NIV)
